Shamrock the Block is not only a celebration of St. Patrick's Day but also marks the beginning of the outdoor festival season.   You might want to take it a little easy at the bar crawl because the Shamrock RunRVA 5k takes place the next morning! Luckily, runners don't have to get underway until 10:30 am on Sunday, March 13, and many participants will surely be grateful for the relatively late start. The 5k run/walk follows a picturesque course through Richmond, starting and ending at Hardywood Park Craft Brewery. About the Altria Theater

Located just west of downtown Richmond, right across from historic Monroe Park, the Altria Theater is the crown jewel in the city's performing arts complex. The 3,565-seat venue opened in 1927 as an "entertainment palace" and meeting place for the Shriners fraternal organization.

Originally known as the Mosque, the theater was designed in Moorish Revival style, featuring dramatic minarets and desert murals. The City of Richmond purchased the Mosque in 1940, conducting a complete renovation in the mid-1990s.

Social distancing makes everything a little more complicated, but brave volunteer workers throughout the Richmond area are still finding ways to help out their community. One big way to do your part is to participate in one of the many Richmond food drives.

Even if you don't have the time to volunteer, it only takes a few minutes to drop off a donation – and it can help, especially for families with young kids!

Looking for a chance to make a difference? You're in luck. There's another Richmond food drive coming up on May 1 that will offer you the perfect opportunity!

Richmond Food Drives Are Crucial to Meeting the Needs of Local Families

During the food drive on April 1, people from all walks of life came together to donate a combined total of more than 5,000 pounds of canned food – that's over two tons! The impressive haul made it one of the most successful charity events in the Richmond area for 2020.

More than 30 volunteers were involved in the drive-through process, which maintained safe social distancing while serving hundreds of donors.

Three organizations received the donations for distribution to those in need.

The sponsors include medical care charity GoochlandCares, UP RVA, which focuses on the needs of local students, and Henrico County Family and Community Engagement. All of them are well known and have a proven history of working for the betterment of Richmond.

Terrific turnout for the previous food drive has led to plenty of enthusiasm for the repeat performance that will be held soon! 

Visit Tuckahoe Village Shopping Center on May 1 to Give Your Donation

To keep the momentum going, there will be a second drive for canned food and other necessities held on Friday, May 1. Donations will be accepted from 10 in the morning until 4 in the afternoon in the same location: The Tuckahoe Village Shopping Center in front of Holland Family Chiropractic in Richmond.

Canned and unopened jars of food will be accepted.

In particular, organizations hope that donors will bring plenty of canned meats such as chicken, tuna, beef, and pork, canned stews and soups, and canned fruits or vegetables.

Jars of peanut butter and jelly will also be happily accepted. These are great because they can safely last for months on the shelf and do not need any complex preparation.

The volunteers will make sure they get where they are most needed!

COVID-19, also known as the coronavirus, has altered our lives in unimaginable ways. All of our families, friends, and neighbors in the RVA have had to face dramatic changes to their lifestyles, one of which includes now wearing protective equipment when we leave the house. According to the CDC, most individuals should wear face masks when walking through public spaces.

While N95 masks or surgical masks should be used by medical professionals only, all other individuals should use cloth masks, which include homemade masks. These masks are surprisingly easy to make and are a fun arts-and-crafts project to take on while we're all sheltered in our homes during social distancing mandates.

How to Make a Mask for Coronavirus

In addition to washing our hands frequently and keeping at least six-feet between ourselves and others in public, wearing a face mask over our noses and mouths in public will also slow the spread of the coronavirus. Homemade masks can be effective in preventing the spread. However, the right methods must be used. Because the coronavirus is tinier than other bacteria, not all fabrics can trap it. The virus seems to attach itself to water droplets that come from our nose and mouth, which means these droplets containing the virus can be blocked with a simple fabric like cotton.

Essentially, you can make a mask out of any type of fabric, as any protection is better than no protection at all. If you can sew a mask from fabric, make sure it fits the wearer snugly and covers from the bridge of the nose down underneath the chin. If you are creating a mask without sewing it, cut multiple layers of cloth fabric out that cover your nose and mouth then secure it around your head by tying it or using rubber bands. Make sure the wearer can speak and breathe clearly while using the mask. To wash, simply throw it in the laundry with your clothing.

Donating Handmade Masks

If you have spare time and would like to do your part to help the RVA during this pandemic, you can make and donate your homemade masks to those in need. The Greater Richmond Area Volunteer Mask Group is connecting mask-makers with facilities that need masks for their employees. This Facebook group helps accommodate the entire process, allowing individuals to post if they need supplies, need a driver for drop-offs, or need materials to create more masks.

If you have any other personal protective equipment that you can donate, Greater Richmond health systems are accepting medical supply donations at this time. Any masks, face shields, gloves, or other PPE is requested for many of our area medical centers including:

From August 23 to 31, the Chesterfield County Fair will bring gladness to the young and the young at heart here in central Virginia. Locals go all out for the Fair, known for its combination of concerts, agricultural events, and kid-friendly rides on the midway.

Preparations are in full swing for the 2019 Fair, which promises to be the biggest yet!

There's so much to do that organizers have put together a daily Fair calendar to help visitors navigate the events. The headlining daily attraction is the 3-Ring Super Circus, including an array of award-winning acrobats, clowns, jugglers, and daredevil thrill acts.

That alone could occupy you for hours, but there's much, much more.

The Chesterfield Tractor Club is a major sponsor of the Fair and will hold fun events and competitions daily. Watch or take part in barrel train rides, rope making, mill grinding, and more. You can also visit the Club's baby animal petting zoo, suitable for your kids.

Every year, history buffs from around the Richmond area come together to create the remarkable Heritage Village. The Village will excite and educate you with oxen wagon rides, craft demonstrations, shanty music, a real steam engine, and violin-making.

There'll even be a full Civil War display courtesy of local tour company Richmond Discoveries.

The Fair incorporates plenty of family fun that's off the beaten track, too. For example, Ackmonster's Chainsaw Art, where America's top professional chainsaw sculptors show their stuff. You'll see a plain log transform into a work of art in just a few minutes. Kids love it!

Naturally, the anchor event of the Fair is the Grand Parade. It features many civic organizations and the winner of the Miss Chesterfield County Fair Pageant, which also takes place during the Fair. Past years have also honored the armed forces with a Military Appreciation Parade.

Music For Massey – a fundraiser for VCU Massey Cancer Center, taking place at Maymont!  For the past 13 years, Napier Realtors ERA has raised over $222,000 for pediatric cancer research thanks to community involvement with this fun, Americana-focused concert series.    Monday's celebration ceremony includes a wreath-laying and Honor Guard presentation with military firing and playing of Taps. Other demonstrations are also planned throughout the day. Spring is here, and soon all of Virginia will be in bloom! Every year, at the end of April, the Garden Club of Virginia hosts Historic Garden Week, also known as "America's Largest Open House." During this event, visitors are welcome to tour over 250 of the state's most gorgeous gardens and historical homes while they're at the peak of springtime color.

• Petersburg
  With a rich history dating back to 1748, Petersburg was once the second-largest city in Virginia. The Petersburg tour gives guests access to beautifully restored homes from the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. It also includes admission to Centre Hill Mansion, a tour of the recently-opened Exchange Building, and a stop at an urban "mini-farm."

• Goochland / Manakin Sabot

Our first congratulations goes to David Hamil, winner of the 2018 LaVerne A. Boschen, Jr. Outstanding Educator of the Year Award for his commitment to education for the Richmond Association of Realtors. David works through the association to train and certify that all agents are up to speed on new regulations, legal requirements and a host of other requirements that any agent licensed in Virginia must adhere to. David has been a member of the Napier team for almost 18 years, having managed two of our offices (Mechanicsville and West End) and is now an associate broker at our West End office now. Thank you, David, for your years of service and dedication to teaching Realtors in our area.

Named for her outstanding commitment to community service is the managing broker of the Napier ERA Tri-Cities office, Libby Gatewood. Libby has been a licensed real estate sales associate in the Commonwealth of Virginia since 1979 and obtained her broker license in 1982. She is a licensed certified residential appraiser and a licensed real estate instructor. In addition to serving Napier agents and clients in the Colonial Heights, Petersburg and many other tri-cities communities, Libby is very active in serving her community through the Virginia Breast Cancer Foundation and other charitable organizations. Libby received the C. Porter Vaughan, Jr. Outstanding Service Award for her faithfulness to the principles of organized real estate and community involvement. Libby was also inducted as the Vice President of the Board of RAR for 2019. We offer our congratulations and thanks to Libby for all that she does for breast cancer awareness and research as well as the commitment you have to upholding and enhancing the values of Realtors.

Last but certainly not least, a hearty congratulations to Dianne Long, winner of the coveted Realtor of the Year award! Winners are chosen based on their faithfulness to principles and laws of organized real estate, efforts to encourage good real estate practice among other real estate brokers, time spent with press and general public explaining the real estate profession, as well as their work with the Richmond Association of Realtors, the Virginia Association of Realtors, and the National Association of Realtors. Winners are also chosen on the basis of involvement in community affairs and their business accomplishments. Dianne has served on several committees and is a past recipient of the RAR Lifetime Membership award and Outstanding Sales Associate of the Year award. A Napier agent for more than 30 years, Dianne is known for serving with class, commitment, and a smile on her face. Congratulations, Dianne, for this prestigious award and thank you for contributing to Central Virginia's real estate market for many years. We are blessed to have you on the Napier ERA team.

One more note for this special night is for Cory Metts, who was accepted into RAR's distinguished Leadership Academy. The Leadership Development Academy is a six-month program designed to develop visionary, service-oriented Realtor members for professional, civic and community leadership roles, and those selected represent the cream of the crop of young Realtors. Cory is an alumnus of Longwood University and stays very active throughout the Central Virginia area in his work with the Young Leaders Board of World Pediatric Project, the YMCA board, and CAPITAL& Career Accelerator. 2. Hopewell Parade and Tree Lighting - December 2
   Ashford Civic Plaza, 302 N. Main St, Hopewell, VA 23860
   In a place with a name like Hopewell, you'd certainly expect a beautiful Christmas Parade. It's all happening between 4 pm and 8 pm on December 2 as part of Light Up the Night, the cornerstone downtown event of the holiday season.
   
   Light Up the Night starts with a parade beginning at Cavalier Square Shopping Center, though you'll be able to enjoy the scene from various viewing locations all the way up and down 15th Avenue until the procession ends at Ashford Civic Plaza.
   
   After the parade comes the Grand Illumination of Ashford Civic Plaza. The ceremony happens on the front steps of City Hall. Once it concludes, elementary school students will put on a choral performance for the crowd.
   
   From there, the free holiday concert at Beacon Auditorium kicks off. You also won't want to miss the holiday carriage rides, which will be available on Cawson street all that evening. It's a great way to see downtown Hopewell all lit up for the holidays.
   
   
3. Beacon Theatre Concert – Begins December 2 
   401 N. Main St, Hopewell, VA 23860
   Right after the Grand Illumination on December 2, you'll be able to walk on over to the historic Beacon Theatre for the annual holiday concert. Not only will you be able to enjoy some of the top songs of the season, but a special guest of honor will be in attendance: Santa Claus himself.
   
   The Beacon Theatre, one of Hopewell's top cultural institutions, is home to some of the most celebrated annual shows in Virginia. Throughout November and December, The Beacon Theatre hosts a wide range of shows for the whole family. The schedule for the rest of 2018 includes Doug Church, B.J. Thomas, Bill Anderson, and Pat Russell.

The Thanksgiving "turkey trot" is an annual tradition our real estate agents love – and we're not the only ones. Plenty of area families sign up for a turkey trot each year. It's a great way to earn that extra slice of pumpkin pie! Luckily, there are plenty of options across the Richmond area.

The turkey trot is the most popular racing trend in America. In 2015, Thanksgiving became the single busiest day of the whole year to run a race, finally unseating the Fourth of July. Believe it or not, the turkey trot tradition goes all the way back to 1896.

That's right – 1896!

The first turkey trot ever took place in Buffalo, New York and was hosted by the local YMCA. While there were only six participants in that original race, today's turkey trots attract hundreds!

• Colonial Heights Virginia Chamber of Commerce 2018 Turkey Trot – 3600 Conduit Road, Colonial Heights, VA 23834
  The Colonial Heights Turkey Trot will take you past some of the best Colonial Heights homes for sale as you get started in a brilliant new tradition. That's right: This is only the 2nd annual event, but the first had an astounding 1,100 participants. Each racer's registration will provide $5 to help local schools be the best they can be.
  
  
• Turkey Trot 13.1 M/10k/5k/1k Richmond Remote
  Celebrate Thanksgiving Day with a remote run.  A remote run is not a traditional turkey trot, but physical activity is involved. It's a race without competition jitters, other runners, and a racing route that doesn't make sense.  You choose the distance--Half Marathon/10k/5k/1k/your own distance, and location--it doesn't have to be near one of our homes for sale in Richmond. I can be a local park, beach, stadium, gym, favorite place, treadmill--it's up to you. 
  
  
• SPC Turkey Waddle 5K Run & Walk – Salisbury Presbyterian Church, Midlothian, VA 23113
  An annual tradition, the SPC Turkey Waddle 5K Run & Walk is right in the neighborhood of top Midlothian homes for sale. Organized by the Salisbury Presbyterian Church, this run in the heart of Richmond takes place on Thanksgiving Day, November 22. It's fun for the whole family. Participants of all skill levels are invited to this truly enjoyable family get-together.
  
  
• Wegmans Turkey Trot 10K – University of Richmond - Tyler Haynes Commons, 28 Westhampton Way, Richmond, VA 23173
  The Wegmans Turkey Trot is one of the biggest events of its kind here in Virginia. Sponsored by one of the area's most beloved grocery stores, it has been running for 41 years now. It boasts a limit of 1,600 participants, which typically sells out every single year. In addition to the 10K road race, there's also a children's fun run – all within the lovely University of Richmond campus.

Important Event Details

This year's Richmond Folk Festival runs from October 12 - 14. Event hours are Friday from 6 pm until 10 pm, Saturday from noon until 9:30 pm, and Sunday from noon until 6 pm.

There is no charge for the event, although there is a suggested donation of $10 per person per day. Free parking is available.  Free shuttles will regularly run throughout each day. What is the RVA MakerFest

The Richmond Virginia MakerFest is an impressive event that redefines the term "maker" to include of all forms of creativity. It brings together artists, artisans, entrepreneurs, scientists, tinkerers, and inventors to show you what they can do. They hope to demonstrate their skills, share their ideas and inspire even the non-creatives in the crowd. 

RVA MakerFest is the product of a non-profit initiative. Volunteers come together to promote lofty ideas. They want to tear down the barriers between creative groups and foster DIY collaboration. They want to promote learning and innovation, and they see their efforts as a way to encourage child makers and encourage STEM disciplines. 

The Makers

The makers are the key to the event. They come from all walks of life, hoping to inspire creativity with an exciting mix of materials, methods, and skills. Glass-blowers, laser-cutters, musicians, and more will entertain and motivate you.

The Central Virginia Blacksmith Guild will demonstrate how they forge metal wares with traditional blacksmith tools and techniques. A Lego artist will create works of art with those colorful chunky little blocks. The Science Museum of Virginia

The MakerFest is held on the grounds of the Science Museum of Virginia. It's an exciting and educational venue with three floors of permanent exhibits, interactive displays, artifacts, and experimental presentations. The staff provides STEM and laboratory learning opportunities, and educator resources that promote the Maker idea. 

The museum also presents special events and programs for children and adults. September 11 - 14 homeschool students can attend a program that focuses on "Creative Thinking." Adults can pack a lunch and attend Lunch Break Science events scheduled throughout September.

Rain or Shine

If it rains, the event will still take place. Most of the event displays will relocate to the inside of the museum. 

Refreshments

Food truck vendors, Airborne Kettle Corn, Sammich, Ninja Kombucha, Happy Empanada, and others will be on site selling your favorite snacks and entrees. Refreshment vendors will sell beer and soft drinks.

A Stroll Through History

Monument Avenue was conceived initially as a site for a memorial statue of General Robert E. Lee after his death in 1870. The statue was unveiled in 1890 and was joined by a host of other monuments in the years following. Only after the turn of the century did Monument Avenue begin to transform into a residential street, and quickly became one of the most desirable places to live in the city, with dozens of vast, splendid homes popping up rapidly along the asphalt block-paved street between 1900 and 1925.

Today, many of those homes exist virtually unchanged and represent an incredible link to Richmond's past. Monument Avenue is a designated National Historic Landmark District and resides on the National Register of Historic Places. 

Monument Avenue offers an opportunity to explore the architectural styles of a bygone era, including the Colonial Revival style that was popular at the time, along with a smattering of Spanish Colonial, Tudor Revival, French Renaissance and Italian Renaissance-style homes. Many buildings along Monument Avenue were designed by the greatest architects of the early 20th century, like the fetching Branch House, designed by John Russell Pope in 1917.

The monuments of Monument Avenue, many memorializing Virginian Confederate veterans of the American Civil War, sparked controversy when they were first built. These statues, however, are only a small part of what makes Monument Avenue so striking. It's a broad, tree-lined avenue flanked by magnificent mansions, and churches, and shaded by towering oaks and sugar maples. Strolling down its sidewalk is like stepping back in time. 

Overall, there are 263 residential, religious, and commercial properties on Monument Avenue and adjacent West Franklin Street that make up the National Historic Landmark District each having its own story to tell.

The Richmond International Dragon Boat Festival is the Only Event of Its Kind on Water

Thanks to its position on the James River, Richmond is known for a wide range of amazing water sports. Teams come from all over the United States to practice in many different forms of rowing and racing – but nothing is quite like the International Dragon Boat Festival.

In this outstanding competition, teams of 20 synchronized paddlers will race 500 meters in splendid 40-foot canoes. Each team is aided by a drummer, who keeps the rhythm they need to work together, and a steersperson who will help coordinate and lead the team to victory.

That alone would be enough pulse-pounding action for any fan of water sports – but it gets better.

You see, each of these boats is a spectacle in itself. The canoes have been carefully crafted to reflect Chinese styling, with dragon heads and tails straight out of mythology. Social groups, businesses, and even groups of professional athletes have all participated in the past.

In fact, the International Dragon Boat Festival has long been regarded as a great way for various organizations – from clubs to families – to build new ties within the community. And, of course, it's a family-friendly outing that anyone can enjoy.

The International Dragon Boat Festival takes place in August every year: This year, it'll all be on Saturday, August 11th beginning at 6:30 am with the team captain check-in; the first race launches at 8:30 am, and an unforgettable cultural performance happens at 11:30 am.

Each participating team is guaranteed three races, one team practice session in the week just prior to the event, a team tent, all equipment – boat, life vests, and paddles – and a highly trained steersperson.

The Diamond broke ground in 1984 and officially opened in 1985. It was renovated as recently as 2009 with all-new seats, major remodeling, and a variety of new amenities. All this effort – at a cost of more than $1.5 million – has ensured one of the best Minor League venues anywhere.

In 2011, the park was enhanced even further. The scoreboard was made even more striking and easy to read, while beautiful new party decks were added to the upper level. That gives visitors the opportunity to have a truly memorable time while watching a great Richmond game.

As for the team itself, the name was chosen through a reader contest at the local Richmond Times-Dispatch newspaper. After the contest concluded in October, 2009 the new team logo was unveiled in December. Who doesn't love flying squirrels?

The mascot, Nutsy, can be found soaring high overhead whenever the team is playing.

Naturally, the Flying Squirrels can be enjoyed throughout the Minor League baseball season, which opens in the first week of April every year. It runs through the whole summer and it typically has its last major game all the way in September.

Of course, training and other events continue to go on throughout the year. Some of these are even open to the public. The stadium is also known for its 4th of July fireworks show, which has been consistently sold out for nine years in a row.

Patrick Henry was considered one of the greatest speakers of his day and made an indelible impact on the Revolutionary era. An Anglican minister and largely self-taught lawyer, he began his rise to prominence just before the Stamp Act, which inflamed anti-Crown sentiment.

Although many amazing speeches and writings came from this period, Henry's "liberty or death" is an iconic example still widely cited and quoted today. It helped give many other influential Virginians the courage to support the burgeoning independence effort.

It's said that Henry spoke from no notes while giving his oration. George Washington was one of the witnesses; he did not mention the speech in his letter to wife Martha written the next day, because documenting what was said might lend weight to a charge of treason by the Crown.

The speech was delivered right here in Richmond, and many monuments and historic buildings still commemorate it. Following the speech, Henry went on to become one of the most successful politicians of his time – his career spanned more than thirty years.

He was elected first Virginia governor and also served four additional terms.

Of course, not all of the most historic buildings are for sale!

One landmark that has stood the test of time is the fascinating Castlewood Plantation. Although it was renovated in the 1970s, it has remained true to its roots stretching all the way back to the early 1800s. Today, it is the home of the Chesterfield Historical Society of Virginia.

Thanks to the conservatorship of the Historical Society, visitors from near and far have a chance to see this truly unique piece of Americana up close. It has been included in the National Register of Historic Places since 1976 and has welcomed guests for decades.

The Story of Castlewood Plantation is the Story of Virginia

Although its foundation wasn't laid until 1817, the story of Castlewood Plantation begins far earlier with the 1779 birth of visionary Parke Poindexter.

Poindexter, whose family emigrated from the English Channel Isle of Jersey circa 1657, served as Chesterfield County's clerk of courts for more than 30 years, holding the position from 1812 to 1847.

He established this fine Federal period home to raise a family of six children.

Castlewood Plantation is an unusual architectural find, as it is a foremost example of the Federal period. This style was in vogue from 1785-1815 and incorporated a range of Roman and Greek influences that bring to mind the classical revival style that inspired the nation's capital.

Many homes were designed in this fashion in Parke Poindexter's day, but Castlewood Plantation stands as the top surviving example. Not only that, but it embraces emblematic elements of the style, such as the five-part layout, carved marble mantels, and formal room in the basement.

Interestingly, Federal architecture was most popular in Salem, MA – not Richmond at all.

After Poindexter's death in 1847, the property soon passed into other hands.

It was left unscathed by advancing Union forces during the Civil War, serving as a parsonage for traveling Methodist ministers during the period. Although many areas of Richmond sustained heavy damage as a result of the city's strategic importance, Castlewood was left without a scratch.

As the Civil War drew to a close in 1865, Castlewood Plantation was bought and sold many times. It was revitalized by members of the Gilmer family in 1976, including patriarch William, great-great-great-great grandson of Poindexter himself.

In 1977, Heritage Savings and Loan purchased the property and took renovation plans to a new level, hiring historians to carefully review every element and restore the property. Thus began its life as a public building – and it became a county-owned property in 1992.

Visitors Can Still See Castlewood Plantation in All Its Glory

In 1999, an anthropological dig at the Castlewood site uncovered evidence of some additional structures, which probably included a kitchen and slaves' quarters. Despite these losses, much of the building is fully intact and faithful to its original design and construction.

Today, guests to the property are welcome to explore every part of this historic dwelling. Plus, there is free public access to a historic archive including artifacts like rare books, genealogical files, scrapbook maps, pictures, and cemetery records – ideal for any local historian!

Children under 12 are admitted free; adults pay either $5 or $10 depending on the show.

You Won't Want to Miss an Exciting Lineup of Talent at Friday Cheers

The complete Friday Cheers schedule is available online and it promises to be a memorable one.

Everything kicks off at 6:30 with Devon Gilfillian and the chart-topping Valerie June. Fresh from a trip to Japan, June was recently featured as a recommended artist on Oprah.com. She brings her unique, soulful vocals to the stage, mixed with funky blues-folk melodies.

RVA Music Night on May 25th will also be a great time to pop in. This spectacular evening will be completely focused on Richmond-area bands with a fresh sound. The headliners include Dharma Bombs, Butcher Brown, and Pirahna Rama.

Riverrock is an Experience Like None Other for Live Music Fans

This year's Riverrock is a joint collaboration of the nonprofits Sports Backers and Venture Richmond, the latter serving as the city's business association for a vibrant Downtown.

Riverrock is one of the most exciting events on the calendar every year, drawing bands and solo performers from all over the United States in a huge variety of styles.

The whole thing happens right along the riverfront in and around Historic Tredegar Iron Works, a unique venue that was one of America's biggest and best iron works in its 1860 heyday. Today, it's operated by the American Civil War Museum, but it hosts portions of Riverrock each year.

Throughout the three days of the festival, amazing acts like the Cris Jacobs Band, The Wood Brothers, and Sister Sparrow and the Dirty Birds will take the stage.

RVA Offers Wild and Crazy Challenges for Athletes During Riverrock

RVA is the official booster organization for all things Richmond, VA. It'll be offering a wide range of fun and exciting events for festival-goers to participate in as part of its Go RVing Interactive Village: An opportunity to try creative competitions and cool equipment hands-on.

Some of the amazing contests in store include the Filthy 5K Mud Run and Sierra Nevada Kayak Boatercross. All necessary equipment will be provided for many events, like the Slack Line Demo and Competition, but racers must sign up at the Go RVing registration tent.

The Adventure Race offers the toughest challenge, with a four-hour, multi-sport event featuring team and individual components. Racers will need to navigate with map and compass as they ride, run, and paddle from a mystery start location, ending right in the middle of the action!

The River Rumble is a triathlon featuring the James River Scramble, Sierra Nevada Down River Paddle, and – perhaps toughest of them all – the 20-mile Urban Assault course. Only one male and one female racer will win it all and take home the title of River Rumble champ!

Many of the most intense events will start in Historic Tredegar and end all the way down the James River on Brown's Island. Beer trucks, food vendors, and souvenir tents will be distributed all through the festival, so you'll never be far from anything you need.

Note that while many of the demos are kid-friendly and most are free, some of them require a separate participation fee. Most of these are $20-$30, but the Trail Trio running event combo will set you back as much as $190 per day. It might just be worth it for the bragging rights!

European powers were still vying for a place on the continent, and the noble experiment we now know as America was decades away from taking a recognizable shape.

Henricus marks the site of many key events in the early colonial, colonial, and Revolutionary periods. It was only the second English community to achieve success in the New World. Settlers on the James River encountered the Powhatans and related tribes: The people of Pocahontas.

How Henricus Historical Park Recreates History

Today, the 1611 city has been painstakingly brought back to life through the recreation of twelve colonial structures. Each is staffed by experienced history interpreters in period costume.

Sites such as the soldier's house, blacksmith's forge, church meeting hall, and tobacco barn have been built with era-appropriate materials, tools, and techniques in mind. The largest of these is "Mount Malady," the first European-style hospital (or "guest-house") in North America.

Arriving colonists often needed to recover from their long voyage, which lasted more than two months from beginning to end. Mount Malady was designed to accommodate 80 people and was an important part of the struggle against illness that colonists faced throughout their lives.

Visitors also have the opportunity to witness the "Indian Village." Here, you can participate in the craft of canoe-making and learn about the principles of harvesting tobacco and corn.

The reproduction Powhatan Village is complete with several longhouses (also called yehakins) with all of the amenities they would have had, including pole beds and fur blankets.

All types of artifacts are on display, and everything is intended to be interactive.

There's Always Something to Discover at Henricus Historical Park

On top of all this, Henricus features a calendar of events, including seasonal celebrations and dramatic re-enactments. During spring and summer, hundreds of participants get together to demonstrate military drills, artillery, and even entire battles.

There's something for everyone, from Musket, Sword & Pike to kid-friendly Camp Pocahontas.

The park is open throughout the year with operating hours between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. Adults pay $9, children aged 3-12 $7, and children under age two visit for free. A military discount is also available.

Henricus is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, welcoming both volunteers and donations.

The Riverfront Canal Walk

The Riverfront Canal Walk is a 1.25-mile path located between 5th and 17th Streets along the James River. It is wide enough for bicycles, pedestrians, and even Segways!  Along this walk, you can experience Richmond in a way that is unique to our city.

Whether you are looking for historic monuments, museums, nature, or even pizza, you can find it on the Riverfront Canal Walk.

You can also swim or float the river, either in a tube or in an actual river raft. There are even some rapids roaring through the downtown area, so you can have an adventure right in the middle of the city. Not too many cities can claim that! There are river rafting outfitters right downtown, so your adventure awaits.

Riverfront Canal Cruises

The canal system in Richmond dates back to the days when George Washington roamed our streets. It is said he was the brainchild behind the canal system, with his visionary goal of connecting the harbors on the east with the trade opportunities on the west. Today there are canal cruises and even private charters available on both the James River and Kanawha Canal. The cruises are seasonal (from April to November), but it's an activity everyone who comes to Richmond should absolutely do.

Monuments and Statues

If you're considering relocating to Richmond, you'll want to spend some time getting to know more about our city's famous history. Monument Avenue in Richmond is just off the Canal Walk, and the entire street is a historic landmark.

There are lots of beautiful statues in this area (and throughout the rest of Richmond), and one of our favorites is the touching statue of Abraham Lincoln and his son, Tad, which sits on the hill behind the Richmond National Battlefield Park Visitors Center. The story goes that the President and his son visited Richmond in 1865, shortly after the Capital of the Confederacy had been burned. You can almost hear President Lincoln explaining about the perils of war as you look at this beautiful bronze statue.

Fun on the Canal

Back on the Riverfront, you're bound to find a festival, concert or other activity going on, and the old buildings and warehouses around this part of the city are becoming extremely popular places to live and work. There are lofts and coffee shops, galleries, shopping and more than 160 restaurants to choose from. And because Richmond is a walkable city, you'll want to get out and explore as much as you can. The weather will likely cooperate, with moderate temperatures nearly all year long, and far more days of sunshine than rain.

In addition to the farmhouse and barn, you can expect to see the doctor's office, blacksmith forge, kitchen, fields, and pastures. The land at Crump Park passed through seven generations beginning all the way back in the 1700s before being donated in 1975.

Crump Park is a Terrific Place for a Picnic

You won't want to miss out on exploring Crump Park before or after your visit.

The Crump Park grounds are open every day from dawn until dusk, serving as a full-featured park in the finest of Virginia traditions. You can enjoy fishing, hiking, and numerous picnic areas, including a sheltered area that is available for reservations.

When in season, volunteers and visitors can enjoy the handiwork of several period-appropriate "guilds." These volunteer organizations produce such things as textiles, baskets, and vegetables to support the mission of the Meadow Farm Museum.

Many of the guilds require no prior experience, and some are even open to children aged 16 and under with adult supervision. It's an outstanding way to learn while becoming part of history!

If you or someone you love went to Petersburg High School, don't miss the 11th Annual PHS Alumni & Friends Holiday Party at the Civic Center on December 23. People who grew up in Petersburg (or currently have homes in Petersburg) look forward to this party all year long, and it's right before Christmas to make sure the reunion is as big as possible.
   
   
4. Midlothian, VA
   Midlothian is a Richmond suburb with a personality of its own, and holiday activities are as abundant here as its creeks. For families with homes in Midlothian, holiday cards are a cinch too.    Downtown Richmond comes together for the Grand Illumination, so two whole downtown blocks will be closed for multiple stages and performances. Local musicians, ballet dancers, historical re-enactors, performing arts students, and other Richmond entertainers and artists will treat the town to their talents from 6 to 7 PM.

The marriage of Halloween and a running event may seem like a match made in well … Transylvania, but according to Running USA, Halloween is the second most popular running holiday, trailing behind Thanksgiving.

Maybe it's the need to burn off calories from gobbling a few too many milk chocolate bites, the irresistible call of dressing like a super hero or zombie to compete in a race, or the desire to take part in local community fun, but this Saturday's Petersburg Half Marathon and 5K Run is sure to be a crowd pleaser. 

The race courses begin and end in Petersburg at Union Station, 103 River Street.  The Half Marathon course features a scenic tour of Petersburg winding through the Old Towne historic section complete with buildings and architecture dating back to the Civil War era.  The 5K course features a loop in our Downtown area with a one-hour time limit. 

Admittedly, Petersburg's historic downtown is a hands-down hit as a backdrop for this local event, but the best scenery may be the participants—many of whom don super hero, villain, funny,  and scary costumes.  Costumes are optional, but having a good time is required.

Runners and walkers of all fitness levels are encouraged to participate.  All finishers from both the Half Marathon & 5K Race will receive a signature Halloween-themed medal and t-shirt to commemorate the event.

Each year race coordinators go to great lengths to design a Halloween-themed medal and t-shirt using a different Halloween character each year—bats, vampires, skeletons, zombies, and werewolves.  Frankenstein may make an appearance this year.  What started as memorabilia for some participants has become a collectible for runners luring them back to Petersburg every October.

Powhatan has many claims to fame; its biggest may be its renowned Powhatan Festival of the Grape, a high-energy celebration of the vintner's art.

Festival of the Grape is a Tradition You Don't Want to Miss 

While many communities throughout the country get ready for Halloween in October, the residents of Powhatan and the surrounding area have their own tradition. The Festival of the Grape will be celebrating its 15th year on October 7.

The Festival of the Grape is held in Historic Courthouse Village, the part of town that celebrates the Revolution-era courthouse that was the community's original reason for being. This annual event connects wine connoisseurs with top wineries throughout Virginia. A full selection of reds, whites, roses, and bubblies will be available to attendees.

What to Expect from Powhatan's Festival of the Grape

Nearly two dozen wineries, the majority of which are from Virginia, will be exhibiting at the Festival of the Grape. Naturally, wine aficionados will have the chance to try their tastiest wares and access special pricing available only during the event.

But that's not all – dozens of craftsmen and artisans will be on hand with lots of breathtaking souvenirs. You'll find photography, jewelry, pottery, knitted goods, glasses, and more. InsideOut and Route 64 will be the headlining bands playing live.

  Bring your tent, RV or even rent a Yurt and spend a night or two, or more at one of the campsites located in PSP. All sites have electricity and water hook-ups, a laundry facility, vending machines, centrally located restrooms and very clean showers with hot water! Overnight guests swim free and get free use of the boat launch so reserve a spot, and don't forget your canoe.
  
  
• Aquatic Center
  A water park in the woods, how cool is that? There are several different pools for all kinds of people at every swimming level. There are even two water slides. If you don't like the pool and just want to get cool, stand in front of a sprayer, or wait under the giant bucket of water until it tips over and saturates you. Certified lifeguards are always on high alert so parents can enjoy themselves as much as their kids. Pizza, hot dogs and other snacks are available at the concession. It costs to enter but the fee is minimal and children under 3 are free.
  
  
• Heritage Amphitheater
  This 2000-seat amphitheater is an absolute hidden gem. "Pocahontas Premieres" hosts concerts, plays and other events throughout the season. Bring the kids, pack a picnic dinner and head over to free movie night for family films like ET and Yogi Bear. Or check out a concert with scheduled performers ranging from jazz, to bluegrass to classical. Concert tickets are $12 in advance or $15 at the door, and gates open at 6 PM. Food and drinks are always available and adult beverages can be purchased during specific events. Culture under the stars. What a wonderful way to spend an evening.

• Innsbrook Taste of Virginia

On Saturday, July 1st, The Second Annual Innsbrook Taste of Virginia, will feature live music, artisans, a kid's zone, and of course plenty of craft beer, wine and delicious cuisine from local restaurants competing for the "Taste of Virginia" title! The fun begins at 3:30 and ends after dark with a dazzling fireworks display. All proceeds to benefit the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

  There is something for everyone in this vast 600 plus acre park, situated along the James River. With so much to do, it's the perfect place to spend the day.
  
  Pack your blankets, chairs, and picnic and head to park areas like Belle Isle and Texas Beach where you can swim, fish, hike and bike. Some park areas can only be reached by bike or boat, but located off Riverside Drive, Pony Pasture has easy access, the most parking available and has water areas calm and shallow enough for small children.
  
  
• Dogwood Dell July 4th Concert and Fireworks
  Located in beautifully landscaped Byrd Park, the Dogwood Dell Ampitheatre will host a free night of live music starting with jazz band, Simply Kevin at 5:30, followed by Carillon bells and at 7:30, the Richmond Concert Band. • Liberty or Death Re-enactment
  On Saturday, July 4th, the St. John's Church Foundation will present a historical reenactment of the Second Virginia Convention of 1775, an event they've hosted since 1976. Doors of the Historic St. John's Church open at 1 PM and although the event is free, it is strongly suggested you purchase tickets in advance to ensure a seat.
  
  
• Louis Ginter Botanical Gardens
  To help celebrate Independence Day, Louis Ginter Botanical Gardens is offering free admission all day, from 9 AM to 5 PM.
