Visit These Richmond Cideries This Fall

            Richmond Cideries

As the crisp autumn weather rolls into the RVA, now is the perfect time to grab some fresh air and a cold drink. If you're interested in sipping on something sweet, our real estate agents encourage you to stop by one of these Richmond cideries for a true taste of the fall season.

            1. Blue Bee Cider – 1320 Summit Ave., Richmond, VA 23230
Take a drive down to the historic Scott's Addition district to visit Virginia's first urban cidery. Offering distinctive ciders that embrace yet challenge the traditions of the craft, Blue Bee Cider uses apples from throughout the state in their delicious drafts. Try the Aragon 1904, their original cider, before moving onto Hewe's Crab Apple or Rocky Ridge Reserve. If you want more than one fruit in your cider, sample the Mill Race Bramble infused with blackberries and raspberries.

            2. Ashton Creek Vineyard – 14501 Jefferson Davis Hwy., Chester, VA 23831
There's no place quite like a Virginia vineyard in the fall. Ashton Creek Vineyard invites you to enjoy the cool weather while sampling their wines. They're ready to fill your glass with a variety of whites, reds, and roses. A 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon, a 2017 Twee Blanken, and a 2018 Lady May Rose are only a few of the delicious aged wines on their menu. Make sure you come hungry as well; their kitchen menu includes charcuterie and cheese boards, sliders, fries, and baked crab dip that all pair well with the vino. Ashton Creek Vineyard is the perfect place to have a celebratory drink after you close on one of our Chester homes for sale.

            3. Courthouse Creek Cider – 3300 W. Broad St. #106, Richmond, VA 23230
Courthouse Creek Cider is the only cidery in the state to produce all of their ciders naturally. They grow their own apples and use sustainable practices throughout their orchard and fermentation processes. Take one sip of any of their nine ciders and you'll taste the flavors of their family-run farm. Cheers to the good life with a Bella Vita or taste the Hoppy Girl that drinks like a light beer. If you're still longing for the summertime, the Endless Summer will transport you back to sunnier days.

            4. Capital Ale House – 4024-A Cox Rd., Glen Allen, VA 23060
Craft beer and cider lovers don't have to venture far for a huge selection thanks to Capital Ale House. There are five locations throughout the area ready to serve you a seasonal pint. If you are up looking at Glen Allen homes for sale, stop by their taphouse to check out their latest selection of hard ciders on the menu. Current options include adventurous ciders like blueberry and grapefruit.

            5. Oak & Apple – 1814 E. Main St., Richmond, VA 23223
What's better than fresh cider? A plate of slow-cooked barbeque and a dog-friendly patio to enjoy them on. Oak & Apple have a draft list containing ciders, beers, and cocktails. As far as ciders go, we recommend trying a few Virginia favorites like the Guava Galaxy from Free Union, the Pineapple Cider from Nellysford, or the Lime of the Ancient Mariner from Hampton. Their tasty ciders are only rivaled by their delicious menu.

            6. Buskey Cider – 2910 W. Leigh St., Richmond, VA 23230
Located in Richmond's craft alcohol neighborhood, Buskey Cider is another fantastic cidery in Scott's Addition. Over a dozen ciders are on tap and ready to serve. If you're new to ciders, try their two flagship options: the RVA Cider and the Tart Cherry Cider. Their other taps are often limited-release flavors so be sure to try them before they're gone. We recommend the premium Heritage Blend Cider, the classic Buskey Dry Cider, or the no-added-sugar Little Bit Sweet Cider.

            Waffles in Richmond

Every once in a while, a holiday comes along that we can really get behind. Did we mention that National Waffle Week is this week? It's the first full week in September, and we are ready to celebrate!

Our real estate agents love Richmond for a lot of reasons—the culture, the nightlife, the music, the rich history, and scenic beauty—but at the end of the day, the thing that might stand out the most is the food. With that in mind, let's all take a tour of some of the Richmond area's best brunch spots in honor of National Waffle Week!

            1. Aunt Sarah's Restaurant - 9010 Brook Rd, Glen Allen, VA 23060
Sometimes, there's simply nothing that beats a classic diner breakfast. When that's what you're in the mood for, head to Aunt Sarah's Restaurant. Breakfast is offered up all day, including hearty waffles served with bacon and a generous scoop of homemade mashed potatoes. Sarah's has two locations, one on Broad Street in Richmond and another in Glen Allen, just around the corner from these Glen Allen homes for sale

            2. The Shaved Duck Restaurant - 15408 WC Commons Way, Midlothian, VA 23113
Duck is indeed a menu staple at The Shaved Duck Restaurant, which provides a unique take on some classic brunch dishes. Duck and Waffles is a menu highlight—and a twist on the more traditional chicken and waffle combo—with a confit duck leg served on a fluffy, crispy waffle and drizzled with rosemary-bourbon syrup. The Shaved Duck is located a stone's throw from these Midlothian homes for sale and is open for brunch Saturdays and Sundays.

            3. Capitol Waffle Shop - 1110 E Main St, Richmond, VA 23219
Capitol Waffle Shop takes a simple concept (make great waffles, serve them all day, repeat), and stretches it to the max. When you need a waffle any time between 9 am and 8 pm, this is where you go. They also make killer mimosas and are within walking distance of some lovely Richmond homes for sale.

            4. Lulu's - 21 N 17th St, Richmond, VA 23219
With one of the best brunch menus in Richmond, Lulu's is always a reliable place to get your waffle fix. Red velvet waffles are one of their specialties, topped with pecan cream cheese and strawberries. Brunch is served Tuesday through Sunday from 9 am to 3 pm. If you're looking for a drink with a little kick to go along with it, Lulu's bloody Marys, mimosas, and Irish coffees are all great choices.

            5. Boychiks Deli - 4024 Cox Rd, Glen Allen, VA 23060
It's as if an old school New York-style deli somehow wandered its way south, made it to Virginia, and decided to stay. Family owned and operated since 1990, Boychiks Deli serves some of the best bagels south of the Mason-Dixon Line, and you can even get yours with generous portions of lox, onions, and cream cheese, just like in NYC. The menu is rounded out with all the classic breakfast and brunch staples, from Belgian waffles and French toast to omelets and egg sandwiches.

            6. Edna's Country Cookin - 3268 S Crater Rd, Petersburg, VA 23805

Picnic in a Parklet: Dine in the Streets Around Richmond

Roadways take us from Point A to Point B, but what if the street suddenly became the spot where we drank, laughed, and dined with our friends and family? Prepare to park yourself in the middle of the road for a picnic: parklets are coming to Richmond! If you're unfamiliar with the relatively new concept of the parklet, our real estate agents have a feeling that you'll love this innovative idea that brings the RVA community out into the street!

            What is a Parklet?

Outdoor dining has always been a popular option, particularly in Richmond where our warm weather is limited during the winter. Having the opportunity to dine outside with our friends and family, enjoying the sunshine and cool breeze, is perhaps even more of a luxury in today's world. Richmond is preparing to turn streets within the Richmond city limits into a parklet so that restaurants can expand their seating options for diners to safely gather.

Think of a parklet like a tiny oasis right in the heart of Richmond. This temporary pop-up park is built in an area that is predominantly used for vehicular traffic like metered parking spaces or smaller roadways. The parklet takes this space and connects to the sidewalk to increase the pedestrian space available. In many instances, these spaces are positioned around popular areas such as restaurants and coffee shops to provide more space for patrons.

The concept of a parklet dates back to 2005 when a design group in San Francisco repurposed a parking space into a "people space". This was joined by a larger movement called PARK(ing) Day which is an annual act to bring attention to the need for more public spaces within urban areas.

            Parklets in the RVA

Venture Richmond is taking the concept of parklets and using them to help restaurants while indoor capacities are still limited. The project called Picnic in a Parklet is easy for businesses to apply for online and will help them with design and getting permitting assistance for their parklet.

Parklets may be temporary or permanent structures and there are already many businesses around Richmond interested in this idea, including The Stables in the Museum District and Soul Taco.

Other past parklet projects have included Robinson Street Association Parklet Project, which brought parklets near Stuart & Robinson and at Cary & Robinson, and Park(king) Day 2019 which brought parklets to local restaurants like Saison Market.

This initiative is one of the many ways our community is coming together to support small businesses. If these parklets are created, Richmond's community will be offered a new space to enjoy the outdoors comfortably and safely.

Would you like to live within walking distance of these proposed parklet locations? Want to be a part of a community that loves supporting local businesses? We can help! Contact us today to browse our Richmond homes for sale.

Peter Chang Restaurants in Richmond and Glen Allen

            Richmond Glen Allen Peter Chang

There are plenty of excellent places to dine out in Richmond, but if you haven't been to Peter Chang yet, you're definitely missing out. This unique Szechuan-style restaurant is a go-to destination for locals and visitors alike.

While our real estate agents prefer not to pick favorites, they can't help but rave about the outstanding dining experience at Peter Chang. Here are just a few reasons to put this restaurant on your list of Richmond's must-visit locations.

Peter Chang - An Award-Winning Chef

Since beginning his career at posh hotels in the Chinese province of Hubei, award-winning master chef Peter Chang has lived an exciting life. He has served as head chef on a popular cruise line, cooked for the Chinese embassy, and made a name for himself while cooking at the China Star restaurant in Arlington.

After receiving a few positive reviews from food critics, he virtually disappeared. For a period of time, he jumped from restaurant to restaurant across the country. With each new appearance, he gathered more loyal fans and obtained an almost mythical status. As the buzz continued to grow, so did the question, "Where will Chang show up next?"

By the time he finally settled down and opened Peter Chang in Richmond, he had earned himself a continually-growing legion of devoted followers. He now prides himself on creating the delicious and spicy Szechuan dishes that have made his restaurants so famous.

            Exciting Menu Items

The menu selections at Peter Chang are sure to please your palate and leave you wanting more. Some of the most popular signature dishes include crispy pork belly, Szechuan beef, lamb chops stir-fried in chili and cumin, and duck stewed in "Ma La" sauce. The menu also includes dumplings and dim sum, hot and cold appetizers, traditional Szechuan meals, lo mein, fried rice, and popular lunch specials.

Two Great Locations in Our Community

While you're in the Richmond area, you have two great locations to choose from.

            • The original Peter Change flagship restaurant in nearby Glen Allen is located at 11424 W. Broad Street. Here you'll find a full range of menu options and a selection of beer and wine.
            • Peter Chang Scott's Addition is located at 2816 W. Broad St. in Richmond, close to the city's center. This trendy and somewhat industrial location has a slightly scaled-down food menu but is also the only Peter Chang restaurant to feature a full menu of exotic liquor drinks.

Whichever location you choose, you're sure to have a dining experience you won't soon forget.

A wide selection of restaurants is just one of the many things that make the city of Richmond such an excellent place to live and work. If you're considering making a move to the Richmond area, we would love the opportunity to show you around. Contact Napier ERA today to discuss your home-buying goals and schedule an appointment.

Richmond Foodie Favorite: ZZQ Texas Craft Barbeque

            Richmond ZZQ Restaurant
Doing it differently is what the team at ZZQ enjoys doing every day: doing it best is what makes them better than everyone else. It's the perfect place to spend a lunch or dinner for those who love Texas barbecue and want to enjoy it without having to catch a flight to Dallas. It's a favorite of our real estate agents, and it's one of the first places our clients go to celebrate after they buy one of the many homes for sale in Richmond.

            Richmond ZZQ Owners
Built brick by brick by Texas native Chris Fultz and his wife Alex Graf in 2013, ZZQ has risen through the ranks to become Virginia's top BBQ restaurant. This rising star is collecting stars and accolades galore with each national competition they complete, and each award they receive. At the rate they're flying, it won't be long before they are named the best barbecue establishment in the country.

A Menu that Melts in Your Mouth

            Richmond ZZQ Food

ZZQ, located at 3201 West Moore Street in Richmond's Scott's Addition neighborhood, prides itself in producing some of the most tender barbecue this side of the islands where the craft originated. Their brisket falls apart on the fork. The shredded pork can be cut with a spoon. Molasses collard greens are so fresh and crisp that your mouth will crave every bite. This makes it a perfect meal for everyone in the family, including the cowboy with a soft heart and the tenderfoot with the temperate stomach.

The pitmasters are famous for their mastery of smoke and flame. These trained artists of the fire know how to craft beef brisket, pulled pork, spare ribs, turkey breasts, and sausages, unlike anything you have ever sampled. Give 'em a try, and you'll see why they are the talk of the town.

            Sides to Boot

There's more to ZZQ than just the main menu. As with any barbecue, it's the sides that complete the dish. To that end, you just might fall in love with their Jalapeno Mac and Cheese, and their Buttermilk Potato Salad is so good you are going to ask for seconds. That's not even going into the fantastic flavors you'll find in every spoonful of Daisy's Butter Beans and their close cousins Mama Singh's Black-Eyed Peas.

Each of these side-dishes is hand-crafted to culinary perfection. Each is the brainchild of Russell Cook, the Culinary Director for ZZQ. His recipes are designed to build and layer flavors within the dish. This creates complexity and depth that most restaurants overlook. It's this ability to build and create a flavor that has propelled ZZQ to the number one spot in the state so quickly.

            Catering Your Richmond Celebrations

What's the best way to celebrate a new home purchase in Richmond? If you ask us, there's no better way than by hosting a ZZQ-catered barbecue where your family, your old friends, and your new neighbors can get together and enjoy some delicious food as you get to know one another.

We encourage you to contact Napier ERA for more information about homes for sale in Richmond right now. Our agents would be happy to sit down with you and discuss the listings they recommend. When you're ready to buy, we can sit down in the office or over at ZZQ to sign the papers and help you celebrate.

Celebrate Thanksgiving in Chesterfield at the Half Way House

            Chesterfield VA Thanksgiving
When it comes to preparing Thanksgiving dinner, if you're like many Chesterfield locals, you may opt to make reservations instead of a turkey.

If your heart sinks at the thought of missing mom's homemade mashed potatoes, cornbread stuffing, and pumpkin pie, don't despair. Our real estate agents have a solution that combines honoring the holiday with local history and coming together with family and friends.

Why not make your family's Thanksgiving Day reservation at the Half Way House in Chesterfield? Often referred to as "the best-kept secret in Richmond," Rick and Sue Young, Chesterfield residents and owners of the Half Way House, offer guests fine cuisine in a cozy, intimate atmosphere.

History of the Half Way House

Built in 1760, the Half Way House served as a resting point for people traveling between Richmond and Petersburg (it was approximately halfway between the two cities) from the Revolution until late in the 19th Century.

Some of its more famous visitors were the Marquis de Lafayette, Generals Robert E. Lee, Ulysses S. Grant, Patrick Henry, Thomas Jefferson, and George Washington. Today, Chesterfield's locals and visitors can take a step back in time and see the original Manor House and the authentic antiques that furnish it. A unique feature of the Half Way House is that the kitchen is in a separate building from the Manor House.

            Daily Dining in Chesterfield

Executive Chef Raymond Allen leads the restaurant's staff preparing both lunch and dinner fare. Topping the list of favorite meals are Chesapeake Bay blue crab cakes, blackened duck breast, and hot apple pie. Reserve the Half Way House for private dining as well.

Lunch is served Monday through Friday from 11:30 am until 2:00 PM. Dinner is served nightly from 5:30 PM until 9:00 pm.

Making Thanksgiving Reservations for You and Your Family

Thanksgiving dinner here is like none other in the area. A local Thanksgiving Day staple in Chesterfield for generations, the "gobbling" starts at noon on Thursday, November 22 and lasts until 7:00 PM.

You'll enjoy a traditional Thanksgiving Day menu with your choice of favorites like roast turkey and baked ham. If you're in the mood for something a little different, order a petite filet, salmon, shrimp, or prime rib entrees.

Make sure to leave room for a homemade dessert: pumpkin pie, pecan pie, hot apple crisp ala mode, and gingerbread with brandied hard sauce top off the meal.

We recommend reservations. Call 804.275.1760.  You can find The Half Way House at 10301 Jefferson Davis Highway, North Chesterfield, Virginia.

Come and visit this historic landmark in Virginia and become a part of nearly three hundred years of history.

Richmond's Carytown Cupcakes Delivers Sweet Perfection

Whether you have a sweet tooth to satisfy, a hankering for a quality craft beer or wine, or just want to connect with other locals in a cheerful atmosphere, check out Carytown Cupcakes in Richmond. Located at 3111 West Cary Street, this gourmet bakery is known for their creative cupcake crafting skills, as well as what is now known as the "Carytown Cupcakes law," allowing them to serve craft beer and wine alongside their famous desserts.

Stop in today for a taste of the sweet perfection Carytown Cupcakes is known for.

            • Cupcakes
One bite of a Carytown Cupcake and your entire definition of what a cupcake is will change. Instead of those boring grocery store cupcakes, these delicious little morsels are crafted around rotating themes. Around the holidays they were known for holiday flavors such as eggnog, but in April you'll find more spring-themed cupcakes in the case, such as strawberry shortcake. They always have a couple gluten-free and vegan flavors to choose from--not the same old boring ones every time but inspired flavors such as gluten-free key lime pie and vegan strawberry lemonade in April. If you're a vanilla type of person, there are also always a selection of favorites to satisfy your need for comfort food, such as vanilla, chocolate, red velvet, lemon, and carrot cake.

            Carytown Cupcakes Menu

            • Craft Beer and Wine
Carytown Cupcakes isn't just for kids, and the fact that they serve craft beer and wine to pair with your cupcakes proves that their treats are engineered to appeal to more mature tastes. They worked hard to be able to serve beer and wine with your dessert, lobbying to expand Virginia's original law that limited bakeries to just serving cordials and dessert wines. Their dedication to the quality of your cupcake experience is why you can now pair a craft beer with your fancy cupcake in Richmond.

            • Puppy Treats
Don't forget your four-legged best friend! While you're enjoying a sweet treat at Carytown Cupcakes, you can also have a treat for your favorite canine wrapped up in a real "doggy bag." Created by dog lovers for dog lovers, these delicious doggy treats are sure to please your pup.

Richmond Is No. 1 Beer Destination in the World

Richmond Beer Destination - Hardywood Craft Brewery
When you think of beer, you might think first about Milwaukee or even about Oktoberfest in Berlin, Germany. If you've followed the recent trends in craft beer, however, you might have heard there's at least one more place that deserves to be mentioned alongside those world capitals of beer.

That's Richmond, VA.   And it's actually the #1 beer destination in the world.

How the heck could that be possible? Just ask Vinepair.com, a leading beer review and travel site, which named Richmond the world's top beer destination for 2018.

Central to the story: The huge proliferation of top-quality local breweries. From a humble start with just a small handful of them, Richmond now boasts at least 32 active breweries – with even more slated to open in the coming years.  That gives it one of the most active brewing cultures (pun not intended) in the world.

Adding to the excitement, WalletHub called Richmond one of the best cities for foodies, noting that it rates as sixth in both restaurants per capita and ice cream shops per capita. When it comes to a variety of foods, Richmond delivers as #3 in grocery stores per capita, too.

Richmond Beats Out Global Destinations to Reign as King of Beers

In ranking the leading beer destinations, Richmond was scored against global cities including New York, Chicago, Rio de Janeiro, Seoul, and many others. Although it might seem surprising at first, taking a closer look at Richmond makes it clear just how it earned the gold.

Richmond Beer Reigns No. 1 Strangeways Brewing

A vibrant, creative world of craft brewing is truly part of this city's beating heart.

Richmond Beer Trail Tour Triple Crossing Brewery

Each year, thousands of tourists are drawn to the area to explore the Richmond Beer Trail. There are even local tour operators who'll help visitors see all the different breweries and other beer landmarks – from the City of Richmond through the whole Richmond region.

(This Richmond Beer Trail map serves as a start for the curious.)

Although Richmond has never been quite as popular as it is right now, it has a historical connection to American brewing going back more than a century.

In fact, Richmond was the first place in the United States where beer could be purchased in a can. The same spirit of entrepreneurship persists to today when many craft beer executives focus on giving back to the community and supporting a vibrant downtown for Richmond.

The first wave of craft breweries arrived in the 1990s, with a handful claiming an even longer lineage. In 2012, Virginia's then-governor Bob McDonnell signed a pair of laws that expanded breweries' ability to do business in Richmond.

Not only did this give breweries the ability to run their taprooms without having a full-service dining facility, but it created the conditions for many smaller breweries to get their start: By leasing space within larger, more established brewing businesses.

That, in turn, has helped to sustain a spirit of cooperation truly unique to Richmond.

From Breweries to Bakeries, Richmond Has Lots to Offer

            Ardent Craft Ales Richmond

Today, Richmond is #1 per capita in breweries and serves as home to top brands like Ardent Craft Ales, Intermission Beer Company, and Legend Brewing Company. This cast of colorful characters is sure to expand as locals welcome more "brewtrepreneurs."

No matter what you're looking for in Richmond, Napier ERA can help you find it. Our real estate agents are experts in all the great amenities and neighborhoods of Richmond. It's never been easier to find Richmond homes for sale that suit your lifestyle, needs, and budget.

Our Favorite Christmas Towns in Virginia

It's a Wonderful Life in These Six Local Communities

            Six Local Christmas Towns

There's no shortage of Christmas cheer here in Virginia, but six towns truly capture the spirit of the holiday season. At Napier ERA, our real estate agents love helping families create new traditions in their homes and these towns are great places to do just that.

            1. Richmond, VA
Our state capital, Richmond, is a big city with a small-town feel, especially when it's time to celebrate Christmas. While you're looking at Richmond homes this holiday season, make sure you check out all the family-friendly events (and adult-friendly night life) that comes to Richmond this month too. On December 15, visit the historic and beautiful Tuckahoe Plantation for their annual Christmas Open House. Then ring in 2018 at the Moonlight Masquerade, a New Year's Eve tradition at the Doubletree Hotel downtown.

            2. Glen Allen, VA
Did you know the North Pole has a branch right here in Virginia? Every December The Virginia Cliffe Inn, one of the most historic old homes in Glen Allen, transforms into the Glen Allen Christmas Cottage, complete with children's workshops for creating holiday crafts and toys. Visit Santa in his cottage and tinker in four different holiday children's workshops this December 9 at the beautiful inn, just 15 minutes away from downtown Richmond. Next year, get tickets ahead of time to enjoy breakfast with Santa the morning of the workshops.

            3. Petersburg, VA
From a festive holiday parade to a town-wide holiday party, picturesque Petersburg knows how to celebrate the season. If you or someone you love went to Petersburg High School, don't miss the 11th Annual PHS Alumni & Friends Holiday Party at the Civic Center on December 23. People who grew up in Petersburg (or currently have homes in Petersburg) look forward to this party all year long, and it's right before Christmas to make sure the reunion is as big as possible.

            4. Midlothian, VA
Midlothian is a Richmond suburb with a personality of its own, and holiday activities are as abundant here as its creeks. For families with homes in Midlothian, holiday cards are a cinch too. Kids can take photos with Santa at the Art Factory (this year's photo-op happens on December 7). A few days later, take the whole family to have brunch with Santa at Independence Golf Club, which is hosting the special holiday event on December 10. On December 11 and 16, Clover Hill Church hosts Christmas Mansions & Festival, a ticketed tradition that now includes an outdoor festival with food trucks, a hayride, and more.

            5. Powhatan, VA
Known for its horse pastures and rolling hills, Powhatan is a lovely place to celebrate the holidays, but make sure you visit one place in particular. At first glance, Mabel's Espresso Bakery Café looks like one of many adorable Powhatan homes. But inside, it's a charming and timeless little restaurant where you can grab a bite with friends or neighbors – or even Santa Claus himself. Don't forget to get tickets for their Santa Brunch on December 16 and their Christmas Cookie Decorating Class on December 19.

            6. Henrico, VA
Families who want a quick commute to Richmond have plenty of homes in Henrico County to choose from. Once they move in, they have plenty of seasonal activities to enjoy too! Our favorite is the Jingle Jam 2017, a huge holiday party at HOPE Church's West Creek campus on December 9. This interactive Christmas event includes farm animals, Christmas characters, a photo booth, and a show that tells the Christmas story in unique and hilarious ways.

Historic Homes in Hanover County - Hanover Tavern

Take a Step Back in Time at the Hanover Tavern

            Hanover Tavern Hanover County

Large or small, Virginia's communities have so much to offer that it's hard to choose one to settle in. One of the most attractive things about the state is how history seems to come alive in so many ways. Every chapter in the nation's history has played out in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

There's perhaps no better example of this than Hanover Tavern in Hanover County, VA.

Hanover Tavern is a Unique Glimpse Into Colonial America

Located right in Hanover Courthouse, Hanover Tavern is the direct descendant of the original tavern that was licensed to stand on the spot all the way back in 1733 – more than 40 years before the signing of the Declaration of Independence. As taverns go, it's one of the oldest in the United States.

It's not surprising, then, that Hanover County locals throughout the centuries have worked hard to maintain and protect it. Not only has so much of its history been preserved, but it has actually continued to function as a tavern for much of the time it has stood.

The story of Hanover Tavern started through necessity.

One of the Epicenters of Virginia Community Since the Start

In the country's early history, the vast majority of people lived in rural areas. The population was so sparse that it was only necessary to hold court once a month in most places.

The judge and those with legal complaints would typically travel from very far away. With that in mind, a tavern was a crucial part of giving them all good food and a warm bed. Stables and other amenities were needed for the large stagecoach teams.

The Hanover Tavern was the solution and has been a fixture of the community ever since.

Since opening its doors 284 years ago, this unique landmark has had many famous guests.

During the Revolutionary War, the Marquis de Lafayette and several of his comrades stayed at the Hanover Tavern. Likewise, George Washington wrote diary entries about it. We know that he stayed at the Hanover Courthouse complex at least twice. Patrick Henry once lived there, and the Patrick Henry Tour – known as Road to Revolution – is a popular attraction even today.

Throughout the Civil War, the Hanover Tavern gained even more importance. It entered the National Registry of Historic Places and became one of the keystone sights on the various Civil War tours and trails. As time went on, more and more notable people passed through.

Some of these include literary giants Edgar Allen Poe and Charles Dickens.

The Hanover Tavern Today: A "Must See" For History Lovers

Today, Hanover Tavern – and Hanover County in general – is still welcoming guests.

The Tavern offers seasonal menus showcasing local favorites like the lunch brisket sandwich, duroc pork, and shrimp and grits. All year around, you can get tavern fare with a distinctive local flourish that's helped the Tavern command rave reviews online.

No matter when you visit, you'll also find a full calendar of events at the Tavern. Businesses and community groups alike use it. Adult education in things like painting and handicrafts are held frequently.

Want more? The Tavern can be rented for other special occasions, or you can simply visit as part of your grand evening at the Virginia Repertory Theater. The Theater is just steps from the Tavern and is the oldest continually-operating dinner theater in America.

There's never been a better time to explore great Hanover homes. Contact Napier ERA to find out more. Our real estate agents are glad to assist you with expert help and advice.

Finding Your Home in Midlothian VA

            Big City Versus Suburban Living

            Suburban Home Midlothian
Lately, there has been a great deal of attention placed on living in downtown areas.  Some love the idea of living in a large metro area with all the lights, sounds, and smells that come with it.

Still, many prefer the quiet, slower pace of living in the suburbs.  If you've been searching for a home in Richmond but living in an urban setting seems too overwhelming, then why not consider one of our stand-out, suburban areas:  Midlothian, VA.

Only a quick 25-minute commute from Richmond, Midlothian was voted by CNBC.com as one of Top 10 Perfect Suburbs in the U.S. and Money Magazine among their Best Places to Live rankings.  If you're looking to relocate to a community with good schools, low crime, quality living, and affordable housing, Midlothian is the right Chesterfield County community for you.

            Buying in the 'Burbs

Typically, suburban home buyers get more square footage for their money than their counterparts buying a home in the city.  Midlothian has been described as Richmond's best suburb when you're ready to scale up with the highest median household income of $123,124 and median home value of $269,752.

In neighborhoods like Centre Point Crossing, Hallsey, Tarrington, and Queenspark, you'll find large estate homes starting at approximately $400,000.

            Entertainment and Recreation

While living in a smaller community may not have the "bright lights, big city" appeal of living in a downtown area, buying a home in the suburbs does offer its own array of entertainment and attractions. Being recognized nationally as a great place to live, Midlothian home buyers can attest to how much they love the convenience of outdoor and sporting attractions like Robius Landing Park, Mid-Lothian Mines Park, and Windy Hill Sports Complex located only minutes from home.

Nearby shopping and dining is plentiful in Midlothian.  Chesterfield Towne Center, Ivymont Square Shopping Center, and Westchester Commons draw Midlothian shoppers to their stores with national retail chains and locally owned stores that you can visit.  For local dining and eateries, try Ruth's Chris Steakhouse, Capital Ale House, Bell Greek Cuisine or Isabella's Bistro & Salumeria.

            Top-Rated Schools

It's important to buy a home in a neighborhood with top-rated schools to increase the resale value of your home and its marketability as well as to ensure your child's education.  Midlothian's school-age children--from elementary to middle and high schools—attend the award-winning Chesterfield County School system.

When you're searching for a home in Richmond, you are sure to hear about our Seven Hills. These neighborhoods have shaped RVA's history and are part of what makes it such a special place to live today.

Church Hill - Richmond's First Neighborhood

            Church Hill Home

Church Hill holds the distinction of being the first official neighborhood in Richmond. It's home to the original 32 blocks of the city and as such has a rich history and many historic buildings. Church Hill also has a beautiful collection of residential properties that embrace the historic ambiance of this neighborhood. Here you can find homes that show the Greek Revival, Federal, Queen Anne and Italianate architectural styles and these properties have been carefully and lovingly maintained throughout the neighborhood's history. Today, the Church Hill North Historic District is part of the National Register of Historic Places.  Homeowners and business owners alike are dedicated to preserving the history and architecture of the community for future generations.

Unique Blend of Past and Present

Today, Church Hill provides Richmond homeowners with the perfect blend of historic with modern. The homes and their classic architectural styles, along with the beautiful streetlamps and cobblestone sidewalks, are the historic side of Church Hill. It's also home to Chimborazo Park and the Richmond National Battlefield, which is home to a museum that houses artifacts from Civil War history. Patrick Henry Park is also in Church Hill near the site where he uttered his famous quote, "Give me liberty, or give me death!" Libby Hill Park, one of the first parks established in the city, is another historic community site. Everywhere you look in Church Hill, history awaits discovery.

What Virginia Loves about The Fan District

            The Fan District Association
When you're searching for a home in Richmond, finding the perfect neighborhood definitely matters. A favorite location loved by Richmond locals is the Fan District. Located between Broad Street and Main Street, this culture-filled neighborhood lies at the eastern part of the West End area

So what is so appealing about the Fan District? Find out why Richmond locals love this historical and picturesque neighborhood.

            Fan District History

            Architecture and History

Considered the largest intact Victorian neighborhood in the United States, over 2,000 historic homes line the streets of the Fan District. Largely developed between 1890 - 1930, this area marks a period of economic prosperity for the City of Richmond. In addition to Victorian homes, it also features architecture in assorted well-known styles including Italianate, Richardsonian Romanesque, Queen Anne, Colonial Revival, Bungalow, American Foursquare, Tudor Revival, Spanish Colonial, and Art Deco.

            Monument Avenue

The rich history of Richmond is visible in more than just houses, most prominently featured on Monument Avenue. This street features a grassed divider lined with statues of prominent figures in Richmond history. The majority of these figures represent Confederate Generals such as Robert E. Lee but also include tennis star Arthur Ashe, a Richmond native.

In addition to the year-round display, Monument Avenue is home to many events including those held by Civil War reenactors and a well-known Easter parade. The street is part of the larger Monument Avenue Historic District.

            Fan District- Community

            Strong Sense of Community

The Fan District is also known for a strong sense of community. This highly walkable area features many restaurants and shops that are easily accessible. Streets feature lower speed limits to ensure pedestrian safety too.

Area residents take pride in their community appearance too, with frequent efforts to maintain yards, clean up after animals, and remove graffiti as detailed by the Fan District Association. But these Richmond residents don't just care about the buildings; they care about the people too.

Fan Village volunteers work to assist older residents, helping them age in place, instead of allowing them to get left behind by new construction and rising costs. Free services offered include simple tasks like taking out the recycling bins or grocery shopping and include kindness such as daily phone calls and well-being checks.

            Calling the Fan District Home

Homes in Richmond are already hot, and homes in the Fan District are even hotter. Home value growth in this neighborhood is currently at 4.8 percent, based on a strong job market, attractive living environment, and reliable home equity.

It's clear that the Fan District provides beauty with picturesque homes, historic artwork, and caring people. Our real estate agents at Napier ERA understand why people fall in love with Richmond community and can help you find a home of your own.

            1. Richmond City

You may know Richmond as a city steeped in history, tradition and outdoor entertainment--and that's all true. But did you know that the city is also a huge destination for fashion, fantastic food and public art? The city is even home to a thriving craft beer scene with more than 20 micro-breweries serving unique, creative flavors that you won't find anywhere else. 2. Henrico County

Meandering its way north of the city of Richmond, Henrico County is filled with family-friendly communities and fun outdoor activities. The Recreation Department in Henrico County maintains a vast collection of public parks along with a golf course, sports leagues for all ages (seniors included!) and summer camps to keep the kids busy while school is out. 3. Chesterfield County

Located just south of Richmond, Chesterfield County has a history that dates back to the county's foundation way back in 1749 and beyond. Today, Chesterfield County has grown into a hot-spot for large, corporate employers with companies like DuPont, UPS, Walmart, Amazon and Capital One operating large facilities within county borders. Even with all of that economic action, the communities of Chesterfield County more than maintain their small-town charm. There is also natural beauty to be found in every direction in Chesterfield County so it's easy to find homes in Chesterfield County that feature great views.

            4. Hanover County

Last but definitely not least, Hanover County is located north of Richmond and it's a lovely place to call home. Hanover County is the smallest on our list by population size and that translates to a collection of small, welcoming towns that still provide easy access to the big city. Homes in Hanover County really do offer the best of both worlds. There's also plenty to do around Hanover County including adult sports leagues, a huge collection of parks and a unique commitment to preserving local history.
